Standards of Practice and My Own Remarkable Teacher
The teacher who made me want to become a teacher myself was my university professor.
I had very negative views of the education system coming out of high school, but my professor demonstrated a commitment to me, in addition to her other students, that I do not recall ever experiencing prior to taking my first course with her. She made expectations clear and was truly invested in our education. Her influence on me was so strong that I intentionally modified my course schedule to ensure that I was able to take as many courses as possible with her through university, and I felt accountable to her in addition to myself, which gave me the push I needed to put extra effort into my learning experiences and my work. Essentially, she made me want to learn.
This professor is professional, engaging, demonstrates leadership skills, participates in ongoing learning opportunities, and seeks opportunities to learn from her students as much as they learn from her. She helped me recognize my strengths, learn from my mistakes, and identify barriers to learning.
I admire her dedication to the profession and commitment to lifelong learning. This professor worked full-time, obtained an undergraduate degree and master’s degree while working full-time and raising three children as a single mom. She then went on to begin her PhD studies as a 50th birthday gift to herself.
I had shared with her that I considered applying to law school, but that my goal is ultimately to help individuals who are at risk and support people in identifying and achieving their own goals. Through our conversations, she helped me realize that what I want to do is become a teacher. I mention her often because without her, I do not know that I would have had the confidence to apply to the Bachelor of Education program. She is the first person I contacted when I was accepted into the program.
She made it very clear to all students that her door was always open, and that she will do whatever it takes to ensure that we all achieve our goals in her course and beyond.
